Clos de la Faille is the only walled vineyard in Alsace planted only to Pinot Noir, one hectare in Wintzenheim sitting right on a geological fault, which is literally what "faille" means. That fault is why the soil flips from pink sandstone to grey limestone to quartz in the space of a few meters, and why this Pinot Noir carries more mineral drive than most people expect from the region. The Barthelmés pick it by hand, ferment with a fifth of the cluster left whole, age it in mostly old Burgundy barrels, and bottle without fining or filtering. What's in the glass is cherry and violet up front, spice and licorice underneath, structured enough that James Suckling gave the 2023 a 95.
