In Le Thoureil, a bend of the Loire in Anjou, Alice Gitton Pouponneau and Antoine Pouponneau tend six hectares of chenin planted before mechanization ever reached these hillsides, some vines pushing past a century old, trained low in the traditional goblet style. Chenin Centenaire is their tribute to those vines: fermented with indigenous yeast and aged slowly in wood, with nothing added to smooth over what the old roots already do well. The 2023 pours pale gold with quince, beeswax and wet stone, dense on the palate yet cut through by a saline, mineral finish that lingers.
