Clos Mogador grows in an amphitheatre of broken slate above the Siurana river in Gratallops, where there is almost no topsoil and the roots push down through cracks in the rock to find water. René Barbier planted it in 1979, and in 2006 it became the first wine in Catalonia to earn the Vi de Finca Qualificada seal, given to wine from a single vineyard. The 2023 is mostly Garnacha and Cariñena with a little Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented partly as whole clusters with native yeasts and aged 18 months in large oak foudres. In the glass you get black cherry, Mediterranean herbs and a graphite edge, with the structure to age for another two decades. Wine Advocate gave the 2023 98 points.
